Mashable: X.com is a tribute to the web address of a company that Musk co-founded in 1999; it was later acquired by PayPal.

In the midst of his continuing heated legal dispute with Twitter, tech mogul Elon Musk has teased the launch of a new social media site in a cryptic tweet.

The CEO of Tesla disclosed the site's name while replying to a query from one of his 103 million followers.

"Have you considered creating your own social platform? If the Twitter transaction falls through, what then?" an account on Twitter called "Tesla Owners Silicon Valley" queried.

Musk responded with, "X.com."

X.com was the web address of a company that Musk co-founded in 1999; it was later acquired by PayPal. Musk repurchased the domain name in 2017 from PayPal. Soon later, he announced the site's relaunch, albeit it now displays nothing but a tiny "x" in the upper left corner of a white screen.

Musk, 51, replied by hinting at his intentions for "X.com" in the "hopefully improbable event" that Twitter pushes this acquisition to complete and certain equity partners don't come through.

If the Twitter acquisition doesn't go through, he'll reinvest in Tesla shares, he said.

Yes.

In the (hopefully unlikely) event that Twitter forces this deal to close *and* some equity partners don’t come through, it is important to avoid an emergency sale of Tesla stock.

Musk's communication with Twitter follows a protracted conflict that started when he made a $44 billion bid to purchase the company and then retracted it, citing the high volume of spam and bot accounts as the reason.

It was claimed by SpaceX's CEO that Twitter did not adequately reveal the number of fake accounts on the platform, which was the last straw in his decision to end the partnership.

Soon later, the social media platform sued Musk. According to the lawsuit filed in a US court, Musk breached his contract with the corporation and inflicted irreparable harm.

Musk's decision to back out of the contract was called "a model of hypocrisy" on Twitter. Musk asked the court to postpone the hearing until next year because of the difficulty of the issues at hand, but his motion was turned down. Formerly willing to spend $54.20 per share for Twitter, the world's wealthiest man suddenly wants out. Twitter is making an effort to make sure the billionaire fulfills his commitment.
